Very Large Scale Integration, translated, for simplicity of a layman, is the technology that enables voluminous number of discrete components to be integrated on a single platform or board (chip). In nascent stages of development, a transistor- the fundamental building block of VLSI was implemented through Vacuum tubes that consumed a lot of power. Later on transistors were realised through solid state technology which led to fabrication of junction based components, for example, BJT (Bipolar Junction Transistor)  & FET (Field Effect Transistor).Breakthrough made in chemical processing resulted in introduction of Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) that gave engineers CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor), this laid the foundation of the present day VLSI technology enabling integration of more than ten million  transistors to be integrated  on single piece of silicon wafer and the ability to control it to deliver complex logic.
Scope of VLSI
Take a look around you, you are surrounded by VLSI based products and enabled technologies , such as, computers, laptop, tablets, smart phones, digital cameras, and even your cars and home appliances and in fact any electronic gadget that you use in your daily activities. Even if we don’t see them on the surface, they are the logic and the brains that are furiously processing underneath the hood of your smart phone or the ATM machine and thus easing our daily life.
With the advent of the IT era, there is a software or automated process for everything, but have we really given a thought, on what platform are this magnificent and much hyped software are going to be installed and used?? No, we are just following the line and churning out software professionals, thus driving the IT superpower tag which the western countries have bestowed us with. Even if someone dares to opt for a career in VLSI domain, he /she is discouraged with myths like “It’s really abstract and complicated –as if it’s some kind of Rocket Science!” Even in terms of carer prospects, it’s projected by various government and non-government organisations and entities that at least 175,000 skilled manpower is badly required by the VLSI based industry every year as found out in study conducted in 2011-2012, and shockingly only 40-50% requirement is met with the rest of the work being burdened on the selected few irrespective of the fact that we are churning out B.E/M.E’s by the dozen but only 30-40% are skilled enough to be employable by the core industry like VLSI basic standards! Ever wondered why any electronic gadget we come across has countries like China, Taiwan as their manufacturing destination! It’s high time to address this basic dilemma faced by nubile engineering and science domain minds- which leads us to the next logical stop on the journey…….

Importance of VLSI
There have been recent doubts and questions about why a fresh engineering graduate and sometimes even experienced engineers have to undergo a paid training/project implementation to be able to land up/shift to a coveted job in core VLSI and closely associated domains like embedded system design ? Let us try to answer this dilemma/confusion arising in the nubile minds of fresh engineering graduates/recent pass outs.
See we should accept the fact that there exists a huge gap of practical knowledge/hands on expertise between the industry and the academia. This is due to the undeniable fact that what is taught at college level is obsolete or too basic to be actually of any help while working at the industry level, whereas the industry expects that whatever manpower they are about to hire will be well versed with the basic concepts and some knowledge about relevant tools and that's the reason we have taken this initiative.
Another point to ponder is that in southern part of India, there are some good VLSI centric academic hubs but in this aspect northern India mainly Delhi/NCR is lacking way behind, irrespective of emergence of sizeable VLSI industry especially in Delhi/NCR. The number of engineering institutions that have mushroomed in northern part of India in the last 10-12 years is phenomenal. Students passing from those colleges are not aware where should go if they want to take VLSI domain as their preferred carer as they and their parents are reluctant to send them to Bangalore etc.
It has been observed that there are some efforts to provide VLSI course and project training around Delhi/NCR but they are focussing only on specific domain- Frontend (mainly design and verification modelling and coding), which equates to showing only one face of the coin and thus misses out on a comprehensive approach, that is a must for turning out industry ready VLSI skilled manpower.
So, after analysing the ground realities we decided to kick start initiatives to provide comprehensive VLSI design course and VLSI internship targeted for engineering students and in fact related academic institutions in Delhi/NCR region.
